Welcome to October, a month full of reasons to celebrate! October is Adopt-A-Shelter Animal Month, Computer Learning Month, Family History Month, International Fired Up Month (focusing on enthusiasm and joy), National Caramel Month (more than 10 million pounds are consumed by Americans annually), National Communicate With Your Kid Month, National Crime Prevention Month, National Pasta Month, National Pork Month, National Roller Skating Month, National Stamp Collecting Month, and National Popcorn Poppin' Month (a personal favorite).

In addition, Saturday is Clergy Appreciation Day.  Just in time for those weddings that clergy perform, Sunday is the anniversary of the day in 1886 whenGriswold Lorillard of Tuxedo Park, NY, fashioned the first tuxedo for men!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes are about time and include a hickory, dickory dock clock and mouse craft. At Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime, participants will hear stories from the time of Columbus and make a ship mobile.

BOOK TALK

The library's Loretta Clark provides this week's book information. All Soul's Eve or All Hallow's Day has its roots in the Celtic religion. In the Middle Ages, All Hallow's Day, a feast to honor the Saints, was celebrated on November 1, and the day before became known as Halloween. In America, immigrants brought a variety of Halloween symbols and customs to their adopted country. "Halloween: An American Holiday, An American History" traces the changes to modern times and shares recipes, poems, songs, and crafts.

The "Halloween Howls" CD will shake those chains and let the "ghoul times roll" with music, including "In Our Haunted House" and "The Monster Mash." A read-along video for children ages 3-8, "Mr. Bubble Gum," is first shown without words to familiarize the child with the story; then it is repeated with the words printed to encourage children to read along.

"The Costumer's Handbook: How To Make All Kinds of Costumes" is just one of the many books that share ideas on creating a unique, fun disguise for adults and children. The library can help make this year a real Halloween thrill!

DID YOU KNOW?

Coat the cut areas of your pumpkins with vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to help prevent your jack-o'-lanternfrom shriveling. Also, sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg inside the lid. When you light the candle, the jack-o'-lantern will smell like pumpkin pie!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Middle-age is when you're young . . . once in a while."
