Do you remember the first place that was your home?
Not your family's home or a room, but your own place. The need for a sense of place, a
home, is one of the most basic needs and longings of humanity. Remember how you went about
personalizing your place, and how comfortable and safe you felt in your home. You can help
provide that joyful experience for other families by working with Habitat for Humanity of
Roswell.
Habitat for Humanity is an international, volunteer
based, non-profit organization which assists low-income families by creating partnerships
between people in need of decent, affordable housing and volunteers who want to become
actively involved in eliminating poverty housing in their community. Future homeowners
work with volunteers to build houses and to improve their homes, their lives, and their
neighborhoods.
To accomplish its mission, Habitat for Humanity
depends solely upon the skills and energy of community volunteers. Habitat for Humanity of
Roswell is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity and receives no funds from government
or organized charitable entities. All construction and administrative tasks are performed
by volunteers, and all materials are donated or paid for with donated funds.
Families are selected solely by Habitat for
Humanity of Roswell and make down payments in cash and sweat equity. Each family
contributes five hundred hours of volunteer labor to build their home and the homes of
others. Upon completion of construction, the home is sold to the selected family. Habitat
for Humanity of Roswell holds the mortgage and deposits mortgage payments in a revolving
fund used to build houses for more Habitat families. Habitat for Humanity does not
discriminate based upon race, color, age, religion, marital or family status, national
origin, physical handicap, or gender.
To continue to grow and build in Roswell, we need
your assistance. Currently, Habitat for Humanity of Roswell is building a home at 6002
Schneider, just north of the Roswell Industrial Air Center. Construction takes place every
Saturday morning from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm. We need individuals who can work in
construction and volunteers willing to serve on the Board of Directors. We also need
donations of building materials and tools.
Please join Habitat for Humanity of Roswell in
eliminating substandard housing in our community. Contact us at 624-2138. To join the
building crew, meet them at the site on Saturday mornings at 8:00 am or contact Ernie
Braunschweig, Habitat for Humanity of Roswell Building Committee, at 623-8106.
To know and not to do is in fact not to know. We need to be active
instruments against evil. We need to do. Let us, then, be up and doing!
